A Dentsu Aegis Network (DAN) Indonesia employee died during a company offsite event outside Jakarta, Campaign Asia-Pacific has learned.

The incident occurred in August last year at an Isobar retreat. The individual, whose identity Dentsu declined to reveal for reasons of personal and cultural sensitivity, worked at Isobar.

Campaign understands that he had been partaking in a drinking game with colleagues the evening prior to his death. Dentsu confirmed that the employee had consumed alcohol that night.

In a statement shared with Campaign, DAN said: “We are saddened by the sudden passing of an employee of Isobar Indonesia, a well-liked and respected member of the team. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family and friends throughout this difficult time.”

Following an investigation, the medical authorities categorised the death as ‘R99’, meaning the cause of death was unknown, although Campaign understands the coroner could not rule out the possibility of alcohol playing a role. DAN said the agency conducted its own thorough investigation into the tragic incident, but was also unable to conclude the cause of death.

Campaign understands former DAN Indonesia CEO SK Biswas attended the retreat, but left before the evening activities took place. His relocation to Singapore last month was agreed many months in advance. The network appointed Maya Watono to head DAN Indonesia in December.

Dentsu Aegis said bereavement benefits were provided and all funeral and post-funeral expenses were covered. Moreover, in recognition of the effect of the death on employees, counselling was made available to all staff at Isobar Indonesia.
