R Balki’s Paa stole the show at the 16th Annual STAR Screen Awards, by winning trophies for best performances. The adman’s second film, Paa also got him a nomination for the Best Director.

Amitabh Bachchan won the award for Best Actor (Male) for his portrayal of Auro, who has a degenerative disease, progeria. The 67-year old actor was in fine form essaying the character of a 12-year old in the film and the performance has won him acclaim from audiences and critics alike. At the STAR Screen Awards, the last time Bachchan had received the same honour was in 2005 for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black. His first film with Balki, Cheeni Kum had won him the Best Actor Award (Critics) in 2007.

For Paa, Vidya Balan bagged her first Best Actor (Female) trophy for the role of Auro’s single mother. Arundhati Nag, who played Auro’s grandmother (called Bum, by Auro in the film) was awarded Best Supporting Actor (Female).

Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots meanwhile won the award for Best Film and Best Director.
