Pirelli's 2017 calendar: Another step towards 'real beauty'

Pirelli's 2017 calendar: Another step towards 'real beauty'
Pirelli has given a first glimpse of its annual calendar, with the 2017 version continuing the evolution away from naked women.

Others include Spectre star Léa Seydoux, Ex Machina's Alicia Vikander, 12 Years a Slave's Lupita Nyong'o and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's Zhang Ziyi, among others.

In an unusual move, Russian professor Anastacia Ignatova also stars. Ignatova teaches political theory at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, according to media reports.

Pirelli's 2016 calendar drew censure and praise in equal measure after taking a more feminist direction. Photographer Annie Leibovitz captured unconventional stars Amy Schumer, Serena Williams and Yoko Ono among others.

This year's calendar continues in the same vein, and is shot by Peter Lindbergh, who also shot the 1996 and 2002 calendars.

While Lindberg told Vogue that today's idea of beauty is a "bloody mess", and that he wanted to capture "real beauty", critics might flag earlier naked shots of supermodel Eva Herzigová in 1996.

He said: "The idea of the calendar is to show what real beauty comes from and not what people impose on you to believe is beautiful."
