Anant's blog: Looking ahead at 2010

As we come to the end of 2009, a few stray thoughts and observations (all my own work).Like, the year will begin with a bang with the announcement of who has won the Unilever account in India. I wait with bated breath.Like, the Hindi GEC space will see more and more action, more reality shows, more stress for senior management in the GECs and lots of moolah for the production houses.Like, English print media in the general news space will be under more pressure next year, both in terms of lower circulation and lower yields.

As we come to the end of 2009, a few stray thoughts and observations (all my own work).

Like, the year will begin with a bang with the announcement of who has won the Unilever account in India. I wait with bated breath.

Like, the Hindi GEC space will see more and more action, more reality shows, more stress for senior management in the GECs and lots of moolah for the production houses.

Like, English print media in the general news space will be under more pressure next year, both in terms of lower circulation and lower yields.

Like, like it or not, newspapers and magazines will raise cover prices. If they don’t, neither God nor advertisers will suffice.

Like, we will see news in private FM radio being cleared this year. To what extent remains to be seen.

Like, advertising and media agencies will see margins under pressure. Retainers will be lower, commissions will be lower, everything the client pays will be lower.

Like, we will see more pitches for both media and creative accounts in 2010 than we have ever thought possible.

Like, Zoozoos will still be alive and kicking, though they might bore me to death by the end of next year.

Like, GoaFest had better think of incredible content if the AAAI insists on holding it in April.

Like, I don’t know if McCann will participate in the Abbys. I know Lowe will not.

Like, the IPL will be a super hit or a super flop and advertisers will be super winners or super losers.

Like, IPL being screened at multiplexes is a foretaste of things to come. Could we see the FIFA World Cup at Globus? The mind boggles.

Like, the FIFA World Cup will surprise all with the audiences in India. It’ll be hundreds of thousands more than thought.

Like, there will be more churn in advertising agencies, media agencies and media houses than all the headhunters in the space will be able to handle.

Like, I don’t get a good feeling about India’s performance at Cannes next year. However, I haven’t seen this year’s scam ads yet.

Like, we’re seeing the effect of the Long Tail in media, and specialist and niche magazines and TV channels have a better chance of doing well than they have ever had before.

Like, digital will grow faster than we thought and next year will be all about understanding digital. I don’t.

Like, we’ll hear of small, unknown digital shops handling big brands and big budgets because the large agencies woke up too late.

Like, I’ll avoid going to New Delhi before and during the Commonwealth Games.

Like, I’ll avoid going to New Delhi even after the Commonwealth Games.

Like, that’s it, ’nuff said.
